Argentina Calls for “Immediate Action” at the ICC as Venezuela Accuses Buenos Aires of Being a “Fake Defender” of Human Rights

Tensions flared on Monday at the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC), after Argentina demanded “immediate action” in response to what it described as the deteriorating human rights situation in Venezuela. Caracas sharply rejected the accusation, labeling Argentina a “false defender of human rights.”

Argentina’s representative, Diego Emilio Sadofschi, warned that the “fraudulent elections of July 2024” have worsened the situation in Venezuela. He also expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the ICC’s investigation into alleged human rights violations, officially opened in 2021.

Responding swiftly, Venezuela’s ambassador Héctor Constant Rosales accused President Javier Milei’s government of politicizing the conference and using it to “improperly attack” the legitimacy of Venezuela’s leadership.
