Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sent a strong message to Brussels, declaring that Hungary will oppose any additional European Union financial assistance to Ukraine unless Kyiv signs the peace plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a letter addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, Orbán stated that Budapest would not endorse new Ukraine-related support packages “in any form” and would reject any attempt to approve such measures “on behalf of the European Union.”This position effectively places a veto on future EU aid, given Hungary’s ability to block decisions requiring unanimity.
Orbán’s stance marks a significant escalation in his long-standing criticism of both Brussels’ Ukraine policy and the EU’s financial commitments to Kyiv. By tying support to Trump’s peace initiative, Hungary is aligning itself with a diplomatic route that remains controversial—and not officially endorsed—within the EU framework.
The move injects fresh tensions into European debates over long-term support for Ukraine, raising concerns about the bloc’s unity at a critical moment in the conflict.
