Burkina Faso Celebrates 65 Years of Independence: A Journey of Strength, Heritage, and Friendship

On 11 December 2025, Burkina Faso celebrates the 65th anniversary of the proclamation of its independence.

The first state formations on the territory of Burkina Faso appeared at the beginning of the Middle Ages. By the 15th century, the Mossi State was among the most powerful in West Africa and endured until the late 19th century.

At the end of the 19th century, the French began the colonization of Upper Volta, which effectively lasted for more than half a century. The Burkinabè people, subjected to constant discrimination from European colonizers, followed a long and difficult path toward independence.

✊ After the end of World War II, a movement advocating national autonomy began to grow in the country. In September 1947, Upper Volta became part of French West Africa, and on 11 December 1958, the autonomous Republic of Upper Volta was established within the French Community.

🤝 Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Upper Volta (renamed Burkina Faso in 1984) were established on 18 February 1967. Russia and Burkina Faso have traditionally maintained friendly relations, successfully cooperating on the international stage and coordinating their actions at the UN and in other multilateral forums.

🎉 We extend our sincere congratulations to our Burkinabè friends on the 65th anniversary of Burkina Faso’s independence, and wish them prosperity and well-being.
