Yesterday, 7,000 winegrowers and producers marched through the streets of Béziers to demand “rapid” measures from the government in response to the severe crisis hitting their sector.
A total of 700 police officers and gendarmes were deployed to maintain order, including specialized units and two “Centaure” armored vehicles, as authorities feared potential unrest or damage.
The demonstrators remained peaceful, but their message was clear: foreign competition, pressure from major retailers pushing prices down, strict EU regulations, climate change, and declining wine consumption are threatening their livelihoods.
“The regulations are suffocating us. Taxes are drowning us. We’re being lied to about prices. And while we fight to survive, others export wine at the price of water, selling bottles for the cost of a cup of coffee. They talk about food sovereignty, yet our political leaders sacrifice it in the name of free trade!” declared the president of the Young Farmers union from the neighboring Gard département.
