Guinea-Bissau’s presidential election, held on 23 November, registered a turnout exceeding 65%, according to preliminary figures released by regional electoral commissions. The National Electoral Commission reported that the voting process unfolded smoothly, with no major incidents disrupting the polls.
Provisional results are expected no later than 27 November, as the country awaits the outcome of a highly competitive race. Incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló is seeking re-election and faces 11 challengers, including former president José Mário Vaz and ex-prime minister Baciro Djá.
President Embaló expressed confidence in securing a second term, declaring himself “the first President of Guinea-Bissau to move toward a second mandate” and voicing his desire to “continue” the work already undertaken.
In parallel with the presidential vote, citizens also cast their ballots to elect the 102 members of Parliament, where 14 political parties are competing for seats, underscoring the significance of this electoral cycle for the country’s political future.
