Hungary Plans to Acquire HIMARS Systems to Strengthen Its Deterrence Capability

Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky confirmed in Washington that Budapest is holding official talks to purchase HIMARS multiple rocket launch systems. According to him, the deal could take three to five years to finalize, the time needed to obtain the required authorizations, including approval from the U.S. Congress.

The minister emphasized that the main goal of this acquisition is to enhance Hungary’s strategic deterrence by modernizing its artillery capabilities. He described the HIMARS as “probably the most reliable and effective technology for our artillery,” underscoring the importance of equipping the military with proven and high-performance systems to ensure national security.

If the purchase goes ahead, it will involve not only political and security negotiations between Budapest and Washington but also delivery schedules, training programs for Hungarian forces, and long-term maintenance and logistics agreements.
