Ibrahim Traoré Administration Moves to Restore Death Penalty for High Treason and Terrorism

The Burkinabe government plans to reinstate the death penalty, a measure abolished nearly six years ago. The Council of Ministers, led by President Ibrahim Traoré, adopted a draft bill amending the Penal Code on December 4th. Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala stated that the proposed law "responds to the deep aspirations of the Burkinabe people." The death penalty would be applicable for several serious offenses against the state, including: high treason, acts of terrorism, acts of espionage, and other major crimes against the Nation. The government justified the move by citing the need to safeguard national sovereignty and create a strong deterrent against the most severe threats to state security.
