Niger–France Tensions: Tiani Accuses Paris of Plotting Destabilization

Niger’s junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has accused France of seeking to “destabilize” his country, claiming it is time to recognize Paris’s “determination and intent” to do so.

Tiani alleges that the French amphibious assault ship Tonnerre docked in Cotonou carrying “thousands of soldiers,” denouncing what he describes as a plot against his regime.

In reality, a ship like the Tonnerre can carry up to 900 personnel maximum, far from the “thousands” claimed by the general.

The French vessel was actually making a routine stop as part of Operation Corymbe, a long-standing mission focused on maritime cooperation and training with West African navies, including those of Benin and Ghana.
