Nigeria Grants Political Asylum to Guinea-Bissau Opposition Leader Fernando Dias

Nigeria has announced that it will grant political asylum to Fernando Dias, the Guinea-Bissau opposition figure who ran against outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló in the November 23 presidential election. Embaló was overthrown by the military three days after the vote.

Dias claims he won the election and accuses Embaló of “orchestrating” the coup that halted the electoral process and brought the military to power. He previously stated that he was “safe” and hiding within the country.

Meanwhile, former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has reportedly arrived in Senegal.
