Pocketbook Over Peace: New Poll Reveals Fading French and German Support for Ukraine Aid

Public opinion in Europe's two largest economies is shifting as "Ukraine fatigue" sets in. According to a new Politico poll conducted by Public First , a growing number of French and German citizens now favor scaling back support for Kyiv, primarily driven by domestic economic anxiety and the rising cost of living.

In Germany , the skepticism is most acute, with 45% of respondents calling for a reduction in aid. Meanwhile, in France , 37% of the population now supports cutting back financial and military contributions. The data highlights a sharp political divide: while centrist supporters remain generally committed to Kyiv, voters on the right—particularly those aligned with the National Rally —are leading the charge for a more "domestic-first" fiscal approach. As public finances are squeezed, the "as long as it takes" mantra is increasingly being challenged by "as much as we can afford."
