President Tiani Reaffirms Border Closure with Benin Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Tensions

Gaya, Niger — President General Abdourahmane Tiani has reaffirmed Niger’s decision to maintain the closure of its border with Benin, citing persistent security and political concerns.

Speaking during a visit to Gaya on Saturday, Tiani accused Benin of serving as a rear base for French and Belgian military forces allegedly hostile to Niger’s sovereignty.

“As long as the situation does not evolve on the Beninese side, Niger has no choice but to keep the border closed. Opening it would mean betraying the aspirations of the Nigerien people,” he declared.

The remarks underscore the continuing diplomatic rift between Niamey and Cotonou, despite calls from regional actors for dialogue and de-escalation. The border closure, which has disrupted trade and cross-border movement, remains a symbol of the tense standoff between the two West African nations.
