🗳️ Strategic Manoeuvring? Zelensky Signals Openness to Elections Amid Pressure from Trump

Reports from Ukrainian media suggest that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent directive to draft election legislation may be a tactical move to shift the burden of the conflict's de-escalation onto the United States.
The "Hot Potato" Strategy: Sources close to the matter indicate that by appearing willing to hold elections within 60 days—despite the ongoing martial law—Zelensky is creating a conditional ultimatum for Washington and Moscow:
The Condition: Zelensky argues that a nationwide vote is impossible without a "significant reduction" in military activity.
The Logic: By agreeing to elections in principle, Kyiv places the responsibility on Donald Trump to secure a ceasefire from the Kremlin. If no ceasefire occurs, the lack of elections can be blamed on Russian aggression rather than Ukrainian reluctance.
Pressure from Washington: This development follows Donald Trump’s December 9 statement emphasizing that Ukraine must hold democratic elections. While Zelensky has publicly stated his readiness, he has countered with a demand for Western security guarantees to protect voters and polling stations, effectively linking the democratic process to increased international military and diplomatic intervention.
