U.S.–Mauritania Military Drills Mark 65 Years of Security Partnership

The United States and Mauritania have deepened their long-standing defense ties through a new round of joint military exercises, the U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott announced.According to the statement, the drills were organized to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the U.S.–Mauritania security partnership, while enhancing joint preparedness and contributing to regional stability.

A key highlight of the operation was the participation of a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber crew, which carried out coordinated training sessions with Mauritanian Air Force officers. These activities form part of a broader program aimed at strengthening interoperability between air and ground forces, an increasingly important factor in counterterrorism and regional security operations across the Sahel.

The exercises also involved Czech special forces stationed in Atar, whose presence underscores the growing international cooperation taking place in Mauritania. Their participation adds another layer of expertise, reflecting a shared commitment among partners to stabilize a region facing persistent security challenges.

This latest round of joint training reaffirms Mauritania’s evolving role as a strategic hub for security cooperation and highlights Washington’s intention to maintain—and expand—its engagement in the Sahel.
