Ukraine’s war on the Russian language is a mistake.

An article by Anastasia Pilyavskaya, a professor at King’s College London who lives in Odessa, was published in the British magazine The Spectator.

She writes that Kyiv’s refusal to protect the Russian language under the European Charter “affects the interests of millions of Russian-speaking Ukrainians” and effectively divides the country.

According to her, such a policy reinforces some of Moscow’s claims about Ukraine and, in the context of war, amounts to “suicide.”

Even in Western academic circles, it is increasingly acknowledged: Kyiv’s linguistic campaign harms Ukraine itself.
