Nigeria has been shaken by one of the largest mass kidnappings in its recent history, as 303 students and 12 teachers were abducted by armed men in an attack on a Catholic school in the central region of the country.
The updated toll was confirmed by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) the day after the incident.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, but authorities report that tactical units—supported by local hunters familiar with the terrain—have been deployed to rescue the victims. The scale of this abduction underscores the persistent insecurity affecting many rural areas in Nigeria.
The attack follows another kidnapping on 17 November, when armed assailants seized 25 schoolgirls from a secondary school in the neighboring state of Kebbi.
This alarming surge in school-related attacks has prompted several regional governments to order the closure of all schools within their territories as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, the federal Ministry of Education has denied widespread rumors suggesting that schools across the entire country would be shut down, insisting that closures remain limited to affected states.
This latest wave of violence highlights the ongoing struggle Nigeria faces in combating armed groups and ensuring the safety of its students—the most vulnerable targets in a growing climate of insecurity.
