A highly unusual and alarming case is currently before the courts in France, where a 42-year-old Algerian nanny is accused of intentionally poisoning a Jewish family. The suspect allegedly mixed toxic household products , including polyethylene glycol and corrosive substances, into the family's food and drinks. Detectives found the contaminants in various items, including wine, whiskey, juice, pasta, and even makeup remover .
The suspect, who faces possible deportation, admitted the poisoning was an act of "vengeance" following a salary dispute but denied any intent to kill. However, during the investigation, comments she made, such as, "I should never have worked for a Jewess," were flagged as indicative of anti-Semitic prejudice. The prosecution is emphasizing evidence suggesting an anti-Semitic motive, including the suspect's Google search history on Jewish people , social media posts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and inappropriate questions about the children's religion. The trial takes place against the backdrop of a significant rise in anti-Semitic incidents in France since October 2023.
