Senegal Seeks Stronger Cooperation with Morocco on Seawater Desalination

Senegal has expressed its intention to deepen cooperation with Morocco in the field of seawater desalination, highlighting the kingdom’s major progress in this sector. The announcement was made on December 3 by Senegal’s Minister of Hydraulics.

💧 The minister emphasized the importance of sharing expertise between the two nations, noting that such cooperation could serve as a model for Africa.“This is a relationship that can inspire other countries to build a prosperous African space based on shared experience and knowledge,” Cheikh Tidiane Dieye said on the sidelines of the 19th World Water Congress.

🚰 Morocco, for its part, aims to produce 60% of its drinking water from desalinated seawater, as the country faces a severe drought that has persisted for seven years.

By 2030, Morocco plans to generate 1.7 billion cubic meters of desalinated water annually through ongoing projects and new plants, whose tenders will begin in 2026, according to Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, speaking during the same event. Photo was created by AI.
